COVID-19 Update from the SASC (April 14th)

At the SASC, we know that violence and its impacts don’t stop—even for a pandemic. Despite our temporary suspension of in-person services at the SASC, we are still here for you. We understand that reaching out for support can be difficult and current physical distancing measures may make it even more challenging to do so.

In order to ensure our continued accessibility, we’ve added a few new ways for you to reach us:

  • Our support services will continue to be offered via phone and email, and our Support team is available Monday to Friday from 8am-10pm and Saturday and Sunday from 11am-7pm. You can reach us by calling 604 827 5180 or emailing us at sasc@ams.ubc.ca.
  • If you’re unable to speak safely over the phone, you can now communicate with SASC Support Workers via text message using Signal at 604 729 5476. Signal is a free messaging app, similar to Whatsapp or Viber, that allows you to send messages over an internet connection, using end-to-end encryption (E2EE). Read our FAQ about Signal here. Unless using an encrypted messaging app like Signal, we encourage survivors to only use text message and email for scheduling appointments with the SASC.
  • We know that phone appointments aren’t the same as in-person support services. To help bridge that gap, we’ll be starting to schedule appointments with Support Workers using a video conferencing platform called doxy.me. Doxy.me is a telehealth platform used by many counsellors, psychologists and other healthcare providers. While SASC Support Workers don’t provide counselling services, your privacy and confidentiality are very important to us and so we chose a platform that is both compliant with Canadian privacy law and designed with the high privacy standards of health care in mind. Talk to your Support Worker about your preference of phone or video appointments and how to use doxy.me if you have any questions. If you haven’t completed an intake yet and want to schedule an appointment, call us at 604 827 5180, text us using Signal at 604 729 5476 or email us at sasc@ams.ubc.ca.
  • Our Roots & Resilience Support Group will be running virtually using Zoom starting April 23, 2020. The group will run for 6 weeks on Thursdays from 4-6pm. For more information or to join this group, call us at 604 827 5180, text us using Signal at 604 729 5476, or email us at sasc@ams.ubc.ca.

We hope that these additional options for connecting with the SASC will allow more folx to access support during the SASC’s temporary office closure. We are all in this together, and our commitment to serving survivors and their friends and family persists in this challenging time.

With love and solidarity,

Your SASC team
