2019 SASC Referendum!
What can you buy for $5.67? A latte? A lip balm? A slice of pizza?
What if $5.67 could buy education, support, and empowerment for every member of the UBC community? If you vote “YES” in the Sexual Assault Services Fund referendum, it can!
The Fund finances, among other services, UBC’s Sexual Assault Support Centre. The SASC, which was started back in 2002 with a staff of just two, now employs nine people to run three central programs: Support & Advocacy, Outreach & Volunteering, and Healthier Masculinities. Over the past 17 years, the SASC has really grown! But its budget hasn’t.
Remember 2011? Cake pops were all the rage, iPads were a novelty, and Obama was president … seems like a long time ago, right? That’s also the last time that the Sexual Assault Services Fund was increased, from $3 to $3.25, indexed to inflation; currently, the fee is set at just $3.63 per AMS member each year. At this point, that’s not enough to keep the SASC going.
The SASC needs increased funding to continue impacting our campus: running workshops and events that reach literally thousands of students every year; advocating for structural change; and, perhaps most crucially, supporting up to 120 assault survivors each month. Chances are, you know someone who has accessed the SASC’s services during their time of crisis, receiving counselling and, if applicable, accompaniment to the hospital and court. And with your support, you can ensure that the SASC will be there for every single survivor for many years to come.
So what can you do to help? It’s simple. Between March 11th and 15th, log on to amsvoting.as.it.ubc.ca and vote YES to increase the fee for the Sexual Assault Services Fund from $3.63 to $5.67. That’s it! In just a few seconds, you’ll have helped to make a difference.
For almost two decades, UBC students have been able to count on the SASC … now, we’re counting on you!
